Why Exercise Improves Your Brain and School Performance

I was out of breath exhausted running with my friend who seemed to be relaxed, Where i was struggling to keep up. Both physically and mentally as he had much better grades than me.
Ever wondered why some of the best athletes you know also seem to be the sharpest in class? At first that felt completely unfair to me. How were people managing to be student athletes with honors classes and varsity spots , and still have energy left? I was always exhausted just from doing homework.
Then one day my buddy invited me to go for a run with him. Just a light jog. I was immediately winded, honestly. But when I got home, rested, and sat down to do my homework, everything seemed to click faster. I finished sooner than usual. Nothing else about my day had changed , so was working out actually training my brain too?
Your Brain Is Not a Floating Computer
The simple truth is that your brain is connected to the rest of your body. It's not some separate machine floating in your skull , it's an organ that depends on your body's health. If you sit in school for 8 hours and then come home and sit for another 5 hours doing homework or gaming, blood flow slows down, your heart rate drops, and your brain gets less oxygen. Trying to focus on quadratics with low oxygen levels is kind of a losing battle. But if you incorporate even simple exercises into your day , calisthenics, a walk, some weightlifting , your body pumps oxygenated blood that essentially 'wakes' your brain up.
What I Actually Do When My Brain Goes Foggy
This doesn't mean being a gym rat automatically makes you smarter , you've probably heard the term 'knucklehead' for a reason. But here's what I've found actually works. When I have heavy brain fog, or I'm stuck in that panic loop where I'm not even solving the problem , just thinking about how I need to solve the problem , I take a 15,minute walk or do a quick high intensity bodyweight workout. When I come back, tired but clearer, my brain can actually look at the problem and work through it instead of just staring at it.
Grades Require Endurance, Not Just Intelligence
High school grades aren't purely about how smart you are. They're also about endurance and discipline. Tests are long. Homework piles up. You're constantly absorbing new topics. If you're sedentary all day, you might think you're conserving energy , but you're actually starving your brain of the oxygenated blood it needs to keep firing. It's not about getting jacked. It's about making sure the engine works with the rest of the car.
Simple Things You Can Do Right Now
If you're doomscrolling, set a 30,minute timer and do 15 pushups in between , give your body something to work with.
If you're stuck on a problem, walk around the neighborhood until you almost forget about it, then come back with a fresh mind.
Take a cold shower in the morning , the shock forces deeper breathing, which puts more oxygen in your brain and sharpens your focus.
The bottom line is that you can't expect your brain to run on empty. I noticed that people who exercise regularly tend to have more energy overall , not less , because their body becomes more efficient, giving them the endurance to actually pay attention in class. That's not about running a marathon. It's just about keeping the engine running.
